The Paleontological Society makes its outstanding scientists available to colleges, universities, and public events for presentations on research, evolution, and the nature of science. We support three lecturers per year who give talks for a variety of audiences: public audiences, audiences of general scholars and scientists, and audiences of scientists and students more closely related to the speaker’s specialized field of research. In addition to academic departments, we encourage public speaker series, K-12 teacher programs, and community organizations to host Distinguished Lecturers.
Distinguished Lecturers make their visits available on an expenses-only basis; no honorarium is required. The Society provides up to $400 per visit toward a speaker’s travel to give lectures. The host institution is expected to cover on-site expenses, including meals and lodging. Limited funds are made available per calendar year, so it is recommended that interested hosts submit a request at least 4 months in advance. Ted Daeschler has been a vertebrate paleontologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia since 1987. He currently also serves as Vice-President for Collections at the Academy, and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science at Drexel University. His paleontological exploration and research on Devonian-age fossils from Pennsylvania and the high Canadian Arctic spans more than two decades. Ted Daeschler and his colleagues have discovered a wide diversity of fossil material from the Catskill Formation in north-central Pennsylvania including the earliest known limbed vertebrates in North America. Those discoveries are placed in the context of the evolution of early terrestrial ecosystems to better understand the ecological settings during this important phase of vertebrate diversification. Daeschler and his colleagues have also organized and carried-out an ambitious paleontological project to search for Devonian-age fossils high above the Arctic Circle in the Nunavut Territory of Arctic Canada. Among the discoveries there was Tiktaalik roseae, an animal that lived 375 million years ago and is a textbook transitional fossil between finned and limbed vertebrates. His presentations will incorporate the methods of fossil discovery and the science behind this research program in vertebrate paleontology.

Dr. Kelley is a Centennial Fellow of the Paleontological Society and received North Carolina’s 2014 Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor given to faculty for teaching excellence. As a Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Kelley seeks to bridge the divide between acknowledgment — even celebration — of the reality of evolution and beliefs maintained by the great religious traditions. She is eager to participate in workshops designed for teachers, public lectures and research seminars.
Dr. Kelley’s scientific research focuses on the evolution and paleoecology of Cenozoic molluscs from the southeastern United States. She is especially interested in predator-prey interactions and their role in the evolution of strategies that are employed by snails to capture prey and by clams and snails to avoid predation.

Jon Hendricks is an invertebrate paleontologist whose research focuses on using total evidence datasets (including fossils, molecules, and spatio-temporal occurrence data) to reconstruct the evolutionary histories of long-lived modern clades. His current research focuses on the evolution of Neogene to modern tropical American cone snails (Conidae), a group made famous by the fact that all members are venomous predators and some species have caused human fatalities. In addition to his systematic research on this group, Jon is especially interested in documenting the responses of cone species to environmental changes associated with the Neogene closure of the Central American Seaway due to the rise of the Isthmus of Panama.
He is additionally interested in the development of new digital resources for paleontological education, outreach, and research, and to this end has played a key role in the development of the Digital Atlas of Ancient Life: www.digitalatlasofancientlife.org. This open-access resource serves as a digital field guide to fossils from certain regions and time intervals, providing new tools to help avocational and professional paleontologists and students identify and learn about their fossil discoveries.
